Australian Solar Projects Worth 6.6 GW Win Government Backing

Australia has selected 6.6 GW of renewable energy projects that will bring new generation capacity to the National Electricity Market (NEM) through a tender under its Capacity Investment Scheme (CIS), marking a significant milestone in the nation's energy transition.

The selected projects, announced October 9, 2025, include a mix of solar, wind, and battery storage facilities spread across multiple states. The initiative represents one of the largest single renewable energy commitments in Australian history.

The Capacity Investment Scheme provides revenue underwriting for new renewable projects, helping to de-risk investments and accelerate deployment. Projects selected must meet strict criteria for grid stability and reliability.

'This announcement demonstrates Australia's commitment to renewable energy leadership in the Asia-Pacific region,' said an energy ministry spokesperson. 'These projects will provide reliable, clean power while creating thousands of jobs.'

The move comes as Australia aims to reach 82% renewable electricity by 2030. The selected projects are expected to begin construction within 18 months, with most operational by 2028.

International investors have shown strong interest, with European and Asian renewable developers securing significant portions of the awarded capacity. The scheme is seen as a model for other countries looking to accelerate renewable deployment.
