Azerbaijan Plans 500 MW Hydropower in Liberated Territories by 2030

Azerbaijan plans to develop 500 MW hydropower capacity in liberated territories by 2030, more than doubling current 270 MW from 30 small stations built since 2020.

President Aliyev stated facility numbers will more than double in five years with 30 additional stations in East Zangezur and Karabakh regions, prioritizing green energy development.

Hydropower represents Azerbaijan's largest current renewable energy source, though potential remains underexploited. The Ministry of Energy estimates 520 MW technical potential for small hydro, generating up to 3.2 TWh annually.

Liberated territory development emphasizes sustainable reconstruction using renewable energy. This approach demonstrates commitment to building back better with modern, clean energy infrastructure rather than replicating fossil fuel dependency.

Hydropower projects complement larger solar and wind developments, creating diversified renewable energy portfolio. Small hydropower proves particularly suitable for mountainous terrain characteristics in these regions.
