Caspian Shipyard gains global traction as UAE, Uzbekistan look to Baku

Baku, Azerbaijan — In a breakthrough agreement, Azerbaijan’s Baku Shipyard will construct two container ships for Abu Dhabi Ports, marking the first time a Gulf nation has turned to the Caspian Sea for shipbuilding.

The deal, signed during UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed’s visit to Azerbaijan, underscores the growing strength of bilateral ties and signals the maturity of Azerbaijan’s shipbuilding sector. Industry observers note that attracting clients from outside the Caspian basin reflects Baku’s rising industrial capabilities and international credibility.

Analysts say the agreement is more than a commercial contract—it positions Azerbaijan as a regional shipbuilding hub with the potential to serve markets far beyond its traditional sphere. Earlier this year, the country expanded energy and infrastructure cooperation with European partners, and this new deal with the UAE broadens its economic footprint into the Gulf.

The collaboration is expected to open the door for further joint projects in logistics, transport, and trade, strengthening Azerbaijan’s role as a connector between regions.
