S&P Upgrades Armenia Outlook to Positive, Affirms BB- Sovereign Rating

S&P Global Ratings upgraded Armenia's sovereign credit outlook from stable to positive in February 2026, while affirming the country's long-term and short-term foreign and local currency ratings at BB-/B. The move reflects improving macroeconomic fundamentals and a more favorable external environment following the US-brokered peace deal with Azerbaijan.

The rating agency projects Armenia's real GDP growth at 5.3% in 2026, easing modestly from the 7.2% expansion recorded in 2025. S&P expects inflation to slow to an average of approximately 3.2% this year as economic activity normalizes, placing it comfortably within the Central Bank of Armenia's 3±1% target band.

The positive outlook signals that S&P may raise the actual rating in the next 12 to 24 months, contingent on Armenia maintaining its current fiscal trajectory and continuing its diplomatic normalization with neighboring countries. The ratings affirmation was broadly consistent with forecasts from other major international institutions: the IMF projects 5.5% growth, the Eurasian Development Bank (EDB) forecasts 5.3%, and the World Bank anticipates 4.9% expansion for 2026.

Key drivers of Armenia's recent strong performance include robust growth in financial services (up 14.7% in 2025), information and communications (up 18.6%), and construction (up 21%), according to IMF Armenia country data. Household consumer spending and business investment were the primary demand-side contributors, rising 10.7% and 15.6% respectively last year.

For the business community, the positive outlook represents a meaningful signal. An upgrade to BB would bring Armenia closer to investment-grade territory, potentially reducing borrowing costs for Armenian businesses and the sovereign, as Armenpress reported following the rating release.
