Masdar Completes 445 MW Bilasuvar Solar Plant Construction

Masdar has completed construction of the 445-megawatt Bilasuvar solar power plant, Azerbaijan's largest photovoltaic facility and a cornerstone of the country's renewable energy expansion strategy. The project represents the most significant component of a three-facility partnership between UAE's Masdar and Azerbaijan's SOCAR.

The Bilasuvar plant, located in southeastern Azerbaijan near the Iranian border, utilizes advanced bifacial solar panel technology to maximize energy capture. Annual electricity generation is projected at approximately 900 gigawatt-hours, sufficient to power over 200,000 households.

Masdar holds a 75 percent stake in the project, with SOCAR owning the remaining 25 percent. The partnership's total investment across three facilities exceeds $400 million, demonstrating strong international confidence in Azerbaijan's renewable energy potential.

Complementary projects include a 315-megawatt solar facility in Neftchala and a 240-megawatt wind farm in the Absheron-Garadagh district. Together, these developments add over 1 gigawatt of clean energy capacity to Azerbaijan's grid.

Energy Minister Parviz Shahbazov noted the projects advance Azerbaijan's commitment to achieving 30 percent renewable energy in its electricity mix by 2030. The solar plants will conserve natural gas for export while reducing domestic carbon emissions.
