Azerbaijan Accelerates Green Energy Transition with 240MW Wind Station

Azerbaijan commissioned its largest renewable energy facility in early March 2026, with President Ilham Aliyev inaugurating a 240-megawatt wind station financed and constructed by ACWA Power, marking a significant milestone in the nation's transition toward green energy.

The wind farm represents the first major delivery on Azerbaijan's ambitious renewable energy commitments following its hosting of COP29 in 2024. President Aliyev stated that Azerbaijan is achieving strong results in its green energy transition, pointing to the rapid implementation of signed contracts with international developers.

According to Caspian News, Azerbaijan has contracted to commission 6 gigawatts of wind and solar capacity by 2030 and 8 gigawatts by 2032. These targets align with the government's strategy to reduce dependence on hydrocarbons while capitalizing on the country's abundant wind and solar resources.

The renewable energy push comes as Azerbaijan's economic structure undergoes gradual transformation. By the end of 2025, the non-oil sector accounted for more than half of GDP for the first time, according to government statistics. This diversification milestone represents progress toward reducing vulnerability to global oil price fluctuations.

International investors view Azerbaijan's renewable energy sector as increasingly attractive, particularly given the country's strategic location for exporting clean electricity to European markets via planned submarine cables across the Caspian Sea. The 240MW wind station inaugurated this month demonstrates that Azerbaijan is moving from commitments to concrete implementation in its green energy transition.
